Custom billing gives you full control over when invoices are sent, how they are split across the policy term, and how broker commissions are handled — for both new policies and endorsements.
Custom billing is currently in beta and is not available to all accounts. Contact support@aiinsurance.io to request access.

New Policy Billing

When binding a new policy, the New Invoices card lets you configure the invoice schedule before confirming the bind.

Invoice Strategy

The Strategy dropdown controls how many invoices are generated and how the total premium is divided:
StrategyWhat it does
Single InvoiceSends one invoice for the full premium amount
MonthlySplits the premium into equal monthly invoices across the policy term
QuarterlySplits the premium into equal quarterly invoices across the policy term
Skip BillingNo invoices are generated
For monthly and quarterly schedules, invoices are evenly pro-rated across the number of periods. The final invoice in the schedule always collects any remaining balance, so the total billed always matches the rated premium exactly regardless of rounding errors.

Timing Controls

FieldDefaultDescription
First Due DateToday, or the policy start date (whichever is later)The due date for the first invoice. Subsequent due dates are calculated from this date at the selected interval.
Send Before Due (days)30How many days before each invoice’s due date it is sent. For example, a quarterly invoice due June 1 with a 30-day lead time is sent on May 2.
Send First InvoiceSend on BindControls timing for the first invoice only. Send on Bind sends the first invoice immediately when the policy or endorsement is bound, regardless of the lead time setting. Send on Schedule applies the same lead time to the first invoice as to subsequent ones.
Auto Send InvoicesSend InvoiceSend Invoice automatically creates and sends invoices via stripe on the scheduled send date. Do not Send creates the invoice as an outstanding balance without sending it.

Commission Billing

If a broker commission is configured on the policy, a Commission Billing dropdown appears:
OptionWhat it does
Direct BillCreates a separate commission invoice for each policy invoice, payable by the brokerage. The policy invoice is sent to the insured (unless overridden below).
Agency BillCombines the premium and commission into a single invoice sent to the brokerage.
Do Not HandleNo commission invoice is generated.

Policy Invoice Payee

Under Direct Bill, a Policy Invoice Payee dropdown lets you redirect the policy invoice to the Brokerage rather than the Primary Insured. This is useful when the brokerage is collecting and remitting the full premium. This option is only visible when a brokerage is attached to the policy. Under Agency Bill, the policy invoice is always directed to the brokerage and this selector is hidden.

Invoice Preview

The card displays a preview table of all invoices that will be created when the policy is bound:
  • Type — Policy Invoice or Commission Invoice
  • Payee — Who receives the invoice
  • Status — When the invoice will be sent: Send on Bind (immediately at bind), Scheduled (sent on a future date), or Owed (created but not auto-sent)
  • Due Date — When payment is due; scheduled invoices also show the date the invoice will be sent
  • Amount — Total invoice amount, with the premium and commission amounts shown separately below
Commission invoices are grouped beneath their linked policy invoice.

Billing Email

At the bottom of the billing step, you can review and update the email address that will receive the invoices.

Endorsement Billing

When endorsing a policy, the billing step shows two cards: Existing Invoices and New Invoices.

Existing Invoices

This card lists all active invoices on the policy and lets you decide what happens to them when the endorsement is confirmed.

Void Strategy

The Strategy dropdown controls which existing invoices are voided at bind:
StrategyWhat it does
Void NoneAll existing invoices remain in place. New invoices are issued only for the net change in premium.
Void Scheduled(Default) Voids only future scheduled invoices. Outstanding (owed) invoices are left as-is. The new invoice schedule picks up from the endorsement.
Void All UnpaidVoids all unpaid invoices — both scheduled and currently outstanding.
CustomLets you individually control which invoices are voided (see below).
Paid and partially paid invoices can never be voided and will always remain in place regardless of the selected strategy.

Custom Per-Invoice Actions

Switching to Custom — or clicking Void on any individual invoice — lets you manage each invoice independently:
  • Void / Unvoid — Mark an invoice to be voided when the endorsement is confirmed. Voiding a policy invoice automatically voids its linked commission invoice as well. Click Unvoid to reverse the selection.
  • Exclude / Include — Remove an invoice from the billing calculation entirely. Excluded invoices are not counted in the premium totals and are not factored into the amount owed on new invoices. Use this for one-off fees or manually created invoices that are unrelated to the policy’s main billing schedule. Excluding a policy invoice also excludes its linked commission invoice.
Void vs Exclude: A voided invoice is cancelled at bind and its amount is accounted for in the new invoices. An excluded invoice is left unchanged and simply ignored by the billing calculation — the new invoices are sized as if it does not exist.

Viewing Scheduled Invoices

Scheduled invoices are collapsed by default. Check Show scheduled to view them. The section expands automatically when the selected strategy leaves scheduled invoices active (e.g. Void None).

New Invoices

After choosing how to handle existing invoices, the New Invoices card works identically to the new policy billing step above. Configure the strategy, timing, commission handling, and payee for the invoices that will be created to cover the net premium change. If Void None was selected and the endorsement results in no change in premium, no new invoices will be generated.

Billing Totals

Below both cards, a totals summary shows the premium, fees, taxes, and commission amounts before and after the endorsement, so you can confirm the net change before proceeding.
